FANTASY NIGHT is tomorrow, Saturday, October 8, 2022. Please, if you have not signed up, just show up and we will put you in a needed spot. As school families, we are all obligated to work and support our fundraisers. A Drive thru will be offered after the 4:00 pm Mass, beginning around 5:00 pm and ending at 6:00 pm for those not attending the event but who have tickets and would like to pick up their meals.

PICTURE RETAKE DAY is this Tuesday, October 11th at 8:15 am. If you ordered, you should find your child’s picture in today’s folder. If you would like your child’s picture retaken, please return the intact packet, along with a short note explaining what you would like to see changed. Students having retakes or who were absent on the day of pictures may dress up for the retake day but will have to change into dress code afterwards.

STUDENT COUNCIL “GHOSTY GRAMS” are in today’s folder. Please support their efforts!

STUDENT/PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES: In this folder you will find conference sign up for all students, preschool through 8th grade. Conferences will begin at 2:30 for 2-8th & at 4:00 for PK/K/1 & Specials. Mrs. Groose, Mrs. Belshe, & Mrs. Adrian will supervise recess duty from 2:30 through the end of the day for those not in conferences. Mrs. Werdehausen & Ms. Grellner will be together for all 2nd-4th grade conferences, and Mrs. Hoecker & Mr. Vandike will be together for all 5-8th conferences.

7/8 HELIAS VISIT: Our 7/8 will be visiting and touring Helias this Monday, October 10th. They will also be eating lunch out. Thanks to Pam Groose, Amy Hagenhoff, & Wendy Whittle for driving our students on this trip! Students, please wear your “Heart” shirts and dress code bottoms.

SPORTS PACKETS are in today’s folder if your child indicated that they would like to participate in either boy’s 5-8th basketball or cheer (boys & girls – all ages). To practice/play students must have three things: completed sports packets, payment of $25 per student per sport, & current physical on file. If you did not receive a packet and your child is interested, please contact Rosie in the office.

QUIZ BOWL PRACTICE: There will be no practice on Monday, Oct. 17 (school out of session) nor on Mon., Oct 31st (Halloween).

CEMETERY LIGHTS: Thanks so much to all who donated to the lights for the cemetery – Tom & Rose Oligschlaeger, Bo & Mary Burgess (in memory of Leonard Kempker), Mike & Tracie Brandt, Darryl Love, Agnes Love, Dorothy Berendzen (in memory of Lisa McDaniel), Glen & Betty Pound, and Patrick & Pam Groose. If the weather cooperates, we are set to do the lighting on Monday, Oct. 31st @ 9:00 am. We welcome all to join us for the procession, which will be leaving from the school cafeteria. If you haven’t been around for this before, we encourage you to join us – it is very enjoyable! While on our way to the cemetery, we will be reciting “The Litany of the Saints”, with more prayers after all the lights are placed. This tradition, which we at OLOSS have celebrated since 2017, is based on an old German custom of placing candles on graves, to be lighted on All Saints Eve, and left burning through the night. People called them the “Lights of the Holy Souls”. Hopefully, we will be able to keep our lights out through the morning of All Souls. While you’re out trick-or-treating, remember to drive by the cemetery – it is a wondrous site!

CLASSROOM PARENT LIST/HALLOWEEN PLANS: The room parent list is at the end of these notes  The room parent coordinator has been assigned to be the central contact for the classroom party – to coordinate & to make plans known to the classroom teacher. For Halloween, we are inviting all parents, parishioners, and community members to participate in our Trunk or Treat. At 1:30 pm on Oct. 31st, students will go on their annual “Halloween Walk”, trick or treating at the parish office, M.H. Bank, and the Credit Union. In conjunction with this, we will also have our 3rd annual Trunk or Treating in the church parking lot. Please pass the word to community members and parishioners – all are invited to treat the kiddos! Please call the school office if you or someone you know would like to participate. In planning ahead, we ask that students not wear scary or gory costumes. No fake blood, devils, etc. Keep it light and fun!

EMERGENCY DRILLS: OLOSS students/staff will be conducting drills over the next several weeks. Classroom teachers discuss these drills with students beforehand, but it may be a good idea to discuss these at home with your younger children ahead of time.

IT'S GETTING COLDER!!! Please make sure your child brings a jacket with them each day, as it has been chilly several days already, and students have had to use jackets from our stockpile.

VIRTUS TRAINING: As a school parent, it is important that you participate now in the Protecting God’s Children/Teaching Safety Program, otherwise known as VIRTUS (if you haven’t done so already). If you help in any way at school, are a room parent, drive students for field trips, coach, etc., you are required to have this course. There is an approximately 2-hour online training course (free) for your convenience. You can access this and create an account @ www.virtusonline.org. Please call the school office if you have any questions.

ICE CREAM!!! Through a grant received from the Dairy Council, OLOS was able to purchase an ice cream/yogurt machine, valued at approximately $1500. We are so thrilled to be able to offer this treat to our students, hopefully at least once a month. However, the grant did not supply funds for actual ice-cream mix. We are looking for ice-cream sponsors, those who would like to donate to an ice-cream fund. We will be experimenting with it soon, but it looks like it will cost us about $30 to make enough ice-cream for our students each time. Contact Rosie or Cindy Lepper for more information.
