An Invitation from the Diocesan Office: Following up on the success of last year’s event, a multicultural celebration will take place at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Jefferson City on November 23, the Feast of Christ the King.   Bishop John R. Gaydos will preside at a Mass at 2 p.m. that will feature representatives of the variety of cultures present in the diocese. Priests of the diocese, including many international priests who are serving here, will concelebrate.  Choirs representing various Hispanic, Hawaiian, African and Anglo liturgical traditions in parishes throughout the diocese will lead and accompany the singing.  Readings and General Intercessions will be proclaimed in eight different languages.  People in traditional ethnic dress will serve in several key liturgical roles.  A Multicultural Experience: After the Mass, a pot-luck banquet featuring food and entertainment from all over the world will be held in the Cathedral Undercroft.  All who attend are asked to bring a covered dish, reflecting their culinary heritage, to share with 12 to 15 people. Last year’s diocesan multicultural celebration was the first time Catholics from so many ethnic, geographical, linguistic and cultural backgrounds in this area came together for one celebration.  It “reflected both our cultural history and our future as a diocese,” Bishop Gaydos recently wrote to priests of the diocese.  The energy and emotion of last year’s Mass was a natural prelude to the banquet and celebration of culture that followed.  “We had time to meet one another, share one another’s company with a meal of traditional foods, and enjoy a variety of cultural dances and songs,” Bishop Gaydos recalled. Entertainment from Around the World: This year’s reception promises to embody an even broader representation of the local Church in all of its glorious diversity. African and Latin American dance groups from Westminster College are slated to perform, as are a Mexican dance couple from Sedalia, a Hawaiian dance group from Columbia, a Filipino dance group from in and around Boonville, and a couple from Hermann specializing in German folk dance. For the Whole Church: Families from all over the diocese are encouraged to attend the Christ the King Mass and celebration to help make it a truly universal celebration of cultural diversity and unity in faith.  People representing the various English-speaking traditions in the diocese are particularly encouraged to take part.  Children are welcome and are likely to be amazed by what they see, hear and taste at the event.  “This celebration is for everyone, for the whole Church,” emphasized Enrique Castro, diocesan director of Hispanic and Cross-cultural ministries, a member of the steering committee for the event. The celebration will end at around 6:30 p.m.  “It will be an opportunity to acknowledge and give thanks for the diversity of gifts and unity of faith that strengthens our Church,” organizers stated.  More information can be found online at www.diojeffcity.org.
