FUNDRAISING PORK STEAK DINNER: The Parish is planning to host a Pork Steak Drive Through fundraiser. We will be having a planning meeting on September 9th at 6 pm (rescheduled date) & all parishioners are invited to attend. A tentative date for the event is November 7th. Pastoral Council urges all parishioners to participate in upcoming parish fundraisers in an effort to replace picnic income. This planning meeting will be held in the school cafeteria. If attendance becomes larger we will move to the gym to ensure social distancing. Thank you, and if you have any questions please contact Jacob Akin at 573-498-3574 or Becky Schwaller at 573-338-1764 for more information.

QUILT RAFFLE: Enclosed in today’s folder is the OLOS Parish quilt raffle flyer. Please support this fundraiser, as it will help replace picnic income as well.

PLAYGROUND SATURDAY! All help needed tomorrow morning, Sat., August 29th at 8:00 am. We will begin work on getting ready for and assembling the new and much-needed playground equipment. Bring any tools that you think would be helpful. Our students are counting on you!

SPIRIT MONDAY! Monday is our first all-school spirit day. For spirit days, you may wear any previously purchased spirit wear, or the new polo shirts being sent home today. Please remember to follow all length and sleeve requirements.

FANTASY NIGHT: Tentative plans are to hold Fantasy Night, our second biggest fundraiser (after the picnic), on Saturday, Feb. 6th, 2021. Planning for this event will be discussed at the Sept. 9 Fundraising meeting.

STUDENT COUNCIL elections will be taking place soon, for students in grades 4-8. Please see enclosed information and sign up. Please return by TUESDAY if your child is interested.

SELF-STUDY – rescheduled – Our 19-20 self-study accreditation process was put on hold due to the early Covid shut-down last spring. It is now on the calendar for October 14-16, 2020. More information on the day to day schedule for the self-study will be forthcoming as we receive more information from the diocesan school office.

EMERGENCY DRILLS: We will be rotating through emergency drills in the next few weeks. Teachers will discuss these drills with their students, but you may choose to discuss these with your child at home to alleviate any fears or apprehension they may have. Practiced drills are fire, earthquake, tornado, and intruder.

SCHOOL SHIRT/HOODIES ORDERS: Today you are receiving the polo shirts that were ordered through your online registration packet. These shirts may be worn for spirit days, or any other school day, but most especially for Mass on Wednesdays. We are encouraging this so that we may present a unified school to our parishioners and guests at Mass. If your child’s shirt is still in the laundry pile on Wednesday morning – do not fret, it is not mandatory. Individual orders for hoodies and spirit wear should be in on Monday.

HOME & SCHOOL MEETING – Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 8th at 6:00 pm. Please make plans now to attend this meeting. Due to the need to practice social distancing and the need to wear masks, we ask that no children attend. All families attending will receive a bonus dress down pass for their child. There will be no meal/snacks.

Wishing you a relaxing late August weekend!

Remember to send your folder back in on Monday.

2019-20 YEARBOOKS will be in progress soon, and when they are complete, an order form will be sent home.  FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK...

8/21/2020

Dear OLOS School Families,

Thank you all for such a wonderful start to the school year. I appreciate all the cooperation with new policies or guidelines regarding COVID Best Practices. These are in place to provide OLOS with a safe learning environment. Also, we may be stricter than other schools, but it is our belief that if we all work together and do our part, we should be able to stay in session safely. Please contact the office if you have any additional questions or concerns about our current procedures. Please make sure you are reviewing information sent home in this folder because they tend to have important information or forms to fill out. I will try to insert information about what is happening in our school weekly. Please follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/olosschool and look for updates also on our website https://ourladyofthesnows.diojeffcity.org/

Sincerely,

Jacob Akin

HANDBOOK ACKNOWLEDGMENT: The Student Handbook Acknowledgement Form is in todays’ folder. The Handbook may be found on our school/parish website. Please follow directions at the top of the form, review the Handbook, and return the sign off to the office as soon as possible.

GREAT BEGINNING! We are off and running on a fantastic new school year! The cooperation and thoughtfulness of so many parents and students has made all the modifications go smoothly so far. We are still refining our processes, so please be patient with us. As parents, we ask you to keep updated with any new happenings by paying attention to all correspondence from the school, via emails, classroom newsletters, and weekly newsletters. Teachers and staff are working towards getting the website up to date with classroom and office information, so please be patient as we make this transition.

DRESS DOWN DAYS: Every Friday is a dress down day for students. We just want to remind everyone that dress down days are a privilege. Please adhere to all length and sleeve requirements, as stated in the Handbook.

SCHOOL SHIRT/HOODIES ORDERS: Orders for hoodies will be delayed for a week or two longer, but all other shirt orders should be in next week. The collared school shirt, which is included in your sustaining fee payment and was ordered through your online enrollment packet, will be used for Wednesday Mass. When we get these collared shirts in and distributed, we are asking that your child wear them on Wednesdays, so that we may present a uniform and unified school to our parishioners and visitors at Mass. (These replace the Reading Counts shirts, a program we are no longer participating in).

FAMILY DIRECTORY: A school directory is enclosed in today’s folder. Please keep this for your use, as it will come in handy when coordinating for classroom events and fundraising.

MASS ATTENDANCE: Students K-8 will attend Mass on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Students 2-8 will attend Mass on Thursdays. Preschoolers are not attending Mass for the time being, due to not being able to use the older students for their “big pal” at Mass.

2019-2020 AWARDS: Awards from the previous school year are being sent home today. Congratulations to all the students on their achievements. Due to the current situation, the awards ceremony that had been planned for the first day of school, along with the preschool graduation, was cancelled.

FUNDS RECEIVED: Over the summer we received $82.49 through the Gerbes Community Rewards program, and $38.70 through the Box Tops program. Thanks to all who support these programs.

BOOK FAIR: The book fair, originally scheduled for September, has been moved to the week of April 12-16.

VOLLEYBALL PRACTICES begin this week. Remember that no student will be allowed to participate in practices without three items – physical, payment of $20, completed sports packet. Only students bringing these items by Monday will be able to practice Monday evening.

SUN BUTTER/LUNCH ALTERNATIVE: Students may choose a sun butter and jelly sandwich in lieu of the main entrée if they have a note from home. They must bring a note on the day that the substitution is desired and must present it to the classroom teacher first thing in the morning. Please note that the “main entrée” is the protein item. For example, if our meal is vegetable soup with grilled cheese & string cheese, the substitution would be for the cheese sandwich & string cheese, not for the vegetable soup.

Thank you for your consideration.

DEADLINE FOR FRIDAY NOTES: Thursdays, 9:00 am. If you have items for the Friday notes, please write these items up, send them in, or email to rbeck@olosschool.org. All non-school related flyers need to be copied ahead of time on paper. The school cannot afford to supply paper for outside events. Upon approval by the principal, the information will then be placed in the Friday folder as a courtesy. It is not appropriate for the school to send out extraneous information that can be handled other ways.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL: We do not have a “stock supply” of medications for students. You may choose to send in a pain reliever or other types of medicine for your child. Make sure to clearly mark the container(s), and send a note giving staff permission to dispense the medication, with explicit dosage instructions and dosage cups/spoons. These will be locked up in the office. Sometimes having medicine available here for your child can mean not having to come after him/her or making a special trip to bring medications.

PARENTS WELCOMED! You are always encouraged to attend Mass on Wednesdays and Thursdays, especially if your child’s class is involved with the ministry.

SIGN UP FOR GERBES COMMUNITY REWARDS:  OLOS is enrolled in the Gerbes “Community Rewards” program. This program offers money back to our school, based on enrolled customer’s spending. It is a really easy process. You just tie your Gerbes shopper’s card to our school account. If you don’t have a Gerbes shopper’s card, it takes less than a minute to get one at the store and also online. All the information needed to complete this process is online. @ www.gerbes.com/communityrewards. Our school code is 48253. It takes just a couple minutes so get all your family and friends to register as well! The school will receive quarterly payments in cash form. We will update you as we receive those funds. This has the potential to be a huge moneymaker for the school – the key is to get many, many people involved. Please pass the word to family and friends and thanks for supporting OLOS School!!!

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER WEEKEND!
