Tues –
Wed
Thurs – All School Mass (7/8 Ministry)
Fri  -   NO SCHOOL – Picnic Preparation

GRANDPARENTS DAY: On Thursday, September 15th we will be celebrating Grandparents Day here at OLOSS. All grandparents or grandparent “subs” are invited to attend Mass at 8:00 am with their grandchildren, and then come over to the gym for refreshments, bingo, and fellowship. The book fair will also be open for grandparents to shop with their grandchildren.

HELP NEEDED: We are asking for two volunteers to help with serving juice, coffee, and donuts to our special grandparent guests on September 15th. If you would be able to help out, please contact Rosie or Mr. V.

THE 15-16 YEARBOOKS ARE IN! If a yearbook was included as part of your child’s 15-16 package purchase, you should find it in today’s folder.

PARENTS WELCOMED! You are always encouraged to attend Mass with the school children on Thursdays, especially if your child’s class is involved with the ministry.

FANTASY NIGHT is scheduled for October 8th, and it will be here before you know it! Today in this folder you will find a flyer to publicize this major fundraiser (more available from office). As a OLOSS parent, you can expect to be contacted by one of the main ticket holders to see how many tickets you might be able to sell. With 45 school families and 300 tickets to sell, it averages out to approximately seven per family. Some can do more, and some can’t sell as many, but every effort should be made to get out and sell these tickets. The upcoming picnic would be a good time to get with relatives and make some sales! The “early bird” drawing for $100 or an additional ticket will be held on September 15th.

BOOK FAIR NIGHT – scheduled for Tuesday, September 13. Students will be able to shop and participate in fun & games, and earn Reading Counts point as well! Make plans now to attend this fun-filled evening!

VISION SCREENING: Miller Co. Health Dept. (they do our health screenings) has put us in contact with an organization that does free vision screening for child care centers and parochial schools throughout the nation, called Saving Sight. Please find enclosed the permission form for this screening, set for Sept. 16th. This is a non-invasive digital screening, and is much better at catching vision problems than the traditional eye chart, as described on the flyer. More information is available at saving-sight.org/KidSight. Please fill out & return the enclosed permission form, allowing your child to participate in this screening.

MARCH FOR LIFE IN D.C.! All 7th & 8th graders and parents are receiving today the information for the annual March for Life in Washington D.C., scheduled for Jan 25-28, 2017. Traditionally, many of our students & parents have attended the March. Enclosed please find the “student packet” and the “adult packet”. Seats fill up on a first come, first served basis, and they fill up quickly so please fill out and return paperwork quickly if your student is interested, and also you, if you would like to attend as a chaperone. The minimum cost this year for all riders is $150. Please contact Nancy Kliethermes for further information. Packets with payment can be turned into the school office, and will be forwarded to Nancy & Carol Plank. The local deadline for all paperwork, fees, and insurance cards is October 1st. If you are an adult chaperone and have not attended a VIRTUS session, please let Nancy or Carol know. If several need training the diocese may hold a class here instead of having to attend in J. C.

CHEER COACH NEEDED:  We have several young girls interested in cheering for the basketball games and they are hoping to find a coach. If you or anyone you know would be interested in volunteering for this, please contact the office. All volunteers must have attended VIRTUS training.

Thurs., Sept. 15 – Grandparents Day, begins with 8:00 am Mass, with Bingo & refreshments to follow in gym

Friday Newsletter 8-19-16

THE WEEK AHEAD:
Mon  -
Tues –
Wed
Thurs – All School Mass (Teacher Ministry)
Fri  -   DRESS DOWN DAY

WELCOME! WELCOME! We wish to welcome everyone to OLOS School for the 2016-17 school year. It was definitely wonderful to see all the smiling faces on Wednesday! We got off to a great start. We especially wish to welcome our new families. They are: Garrett & Amber Backues & son Landon (K), Rance & Jonie Blake & son Rance “Thayer” (PK), Brena Groose (PK), Pierson Groose (PK), Jay & Gabby Harms and daughter Emily (K) & son Titus (PK), Eli Kempker (PK), and Alayna Wood (PK). The OLOS School family welcomes you all!

NEW THIS YEAR/DRESS DOWN DAYS: Every Friday will be a dress down day. Additionally, all home game days will be School Spirit Days. Birthday dress down passes may be used on any day except on Thursdays or any other day we may have Mass. Absolutely NO DRESSING DOWN on Mass days. Remember, even on dress down days all length and sleeve requirements are still in force.

PICNIC WORK LIST: The picnic committee asked that we include a picnic work list in the folder this week. They wish to encourage all students and parents to help at the picnic. An effort was made at the end of the school year last year to include any new school family, regardless of whether they attended this parish or another parish. If you are new to OLOS School, and do not see your name on the list, please use the contact information in the picnic packet to find out where you are most needed. Students in 3rd grade and up are usually assigned a specific job, and younger students are encouraged to pick up trash throughout the day.

BOOK FAIR NIGHT – scheduled for Tuesday, September 13. Students will be able to shop and participate in fun & games, and earn Reading Counts point as well! Make plans now to attend this fun-filled evening!

VOLLEYBALL PACKETS are in today’s folder. Remember that all players must have the following three items to the school office before being allowed to practice: $20 athletic fee, completed athletic packet, and a current physical. Please return completed packet on Monday.

OPTION C LOG IN INFORMATION is in today’s folder for each parent. Please take the time to log on and familiarize yourself with the site, as this is where you can find payment history and grades for students grades 3rd on up. You may also wish to reset your password when you log-on, if you haven’t in the past. Also, please take the time to look at your emergency alert preferences and change as needed. Directions for doing this are in today’s folder as well.

GERBES “TAKE CHARGE OF EDUCATION” contributed $44.14 to OLOSS for last quarter. Five households participated in these rewards through their normal shopping. This is money that Dillons has set aside to donate to schools, based on the purchases of registered Gerbes card users. Log on to dillonstores.com and get your Gerbes card tied to OLOS School to help out. It’s free and painless!

CARTRIDGES: We also received $16.05 for cartridges collected over the summer.

WELCOME BACK FATHER! Father Pat will be back from Ireland this upcoming week, so we WILL have all school Mass on Thursday. We really missed Father Pat so we excitedly welcome him back!

SUMMER BABY! We welcome new little Colton Avery McKenna! Colton is little brother to first grader, Lane, and son to proud parents, Brett & Cindy. Colton was born on June 1st and weighed in at 5 pounds, 12 ounces. Congrats to Lane & family!

DEADLINE FOR FRIDAY NOTES: Thursdays, 9:00 am. All non-school related flyers need to be copied ahead of time on paper (the school cannot afford to supply paper for outside events). Upon approval by the principal, the information will then be placed in the Friday folder as a courtesy. It is not appropriate for the school to send out extraneous information that can be handled other ways. Also, if you have items for the Friday notes, please write these items up, send them in, or email them to rosie@radiowire.net (call to let me know you have emailed please). I don’t mind doing a little editing and rewording, but the bulk of the item should be outlined with details.

LUNCH NOTICE: For students purchasing daily lunches: Students may choose a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in lieu of the main entrée if they have a note from home. They must bring a note on the day that the substitution is desired and must present it to the classroom teacher first thing in the morning. Please note that the “main entrée” is the protein item. For example, if our meal is vegetable soup with grilled cheese & string cheese, the substitution would be for the cheese sandwich & string cheese, not for the vegetable soup.

OLOS SCHOOL AND FACEBOOK: Did you know that OLOSS is on Facebook? Search for Our Lady of the Snows Home & School Association and request to join. This group is open to all school families. grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends. It is a way to connect about all school related events and activities.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL: We do not have a “stock supply” of medications for students. You may choose to send in a pain reliever or other types of medicine for your child. Make sure to clearly mark the container(s), and send a note giving staff permission to dispense the medication, with explicit dosage instructions and dosage cups/spoons. These will be locked up in the office. Sometimes having medicine available here for your child can mean not having to come after him/her or making a special trip to bring medications.

COLLECTION ENVELOPES FOR THURSDAY MASS: Each Thursday, the students have the opportunity to place their offering in the collection. If you need collection envelopes at home, please let us know & some will be sent home. We also have them available in the cafeteria for student use.

HOMEWORK can only be picked up between 3:00 and 3:15 each day for students who have been absent. Requests can be made to send work home with siblings or others. Please specifically request homework when calling in your child’s absence if you so prefer. Some parents prefer to not have the homework, especially if their child is still feeling poorly.

SAVE, SAVE, SAVE. Save any used print cartridges, laser or jet, fax cartridges, etc, and send them in to school or leave in the church vestibule in the box so marked.
-Save those “Box Tops” found on many, many groceries & other misc. items – worth 10 cents each.
-Save Best Choice UPC’s (not the label).

BIRTHDAY PARTIES/GET TOGETHERS: If your child is inviting children to a party from school, and is not including either the entire class, or all the girls, or all the boys, it is not appropriate to pass out invitations at school. To do this causes hurt feelings with some students. We know that this is not intentional, but it happens. If all are not invited (or all the girls or all the boys) then invitations must be handled outside of school. Thank you for your cooperation.

REMINDER TO PARENTS OF STUDENTS BRINGING LUNCHES FROM HOME:  Please see that your child’s lunch has everything they need for their meal – DRINKS, plates, utensils, condiments, napkins. The lunch program cannot afford to supply these things if the student is not buying the daily lunch.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR:
Tues, Sept. 13 – Book Fair Night 6:00 – 7:30 pm
Thurs., Sept. 15 – Grandparents Day, begins with 8:00 am Mass, with Bingo & refreshments to follow in gym

Have a fantastic weekend, everyone!
Try to get out and enjoy the cooler weather (hopefully??!!)
Please return your folder on MONDAY!
