CEMETERY LIGHTS: Like last year, the school
children will be placing the lights (tea lights) on all the stone markers in
the cemetery on the eve of All Saints (Halloween), to stay lit through All
Souls. This goes back to a tradition originating in Germany where people lit
candles and placed them on the graves of their loved ones, letting them burn
throughout the night before All Saints, representing the “light of the holy
souls”. We do this entirely through donated funds. This is a great way to honor
those you love who have passed away. Any donation is needed and appreciated.
You may send your donation to school in an envelope marked “Cemetery Lights”,
or place in the Sunday collection. Thanks for any help you can give to this
project. (Last year, if you saw this on the night of Halloween, you know what a
spectacular sight it was. We received many positive comments from the
community!)
DADS TAKE NOTE! Mark your calendar now for the morning of
October 17th, when we will gather for Mass, enjoy “donuts with dad”,
and have some fun!
HOME & SCHOOL MEETING: The first Home
& School meeting will be Tuesday, October 23rd at 6:30. Fr. Alex
wishes to address ALL SCHOOL PARENTS at the first H & S meeting. Please
make plans now to attend this mandatory meeting.
WATER ONLY! Students may bring water bottles to school to
drink during class time but the bottles should contain WATER ONLY – no
additives, flavorings, etc. (the exception would be for lunchtime, students
bringing sack lunch).
COLLECTION ENVELOPES FOR WEDNESDAY MASS: This year we are asking each student to bring in a bag of change from home to keep at school. On Tuesday afternoons
the students will get their envelope ready in the classroom. This could be
something the student has earned himself/herself (best) or loose change
provided by the parent. If you have not already done so, please send in your
child’s money in a marked container or bag. Thank you for your help!
EMERGENCY DRILLS: Now that we have practiced
all drills once, we will be conducting unannounced drills over the next several
weeks. Classroom teachers discuss these drills with students beforehand, but it
may be a good idea to discuss these at home with your younger children ahead of
time.
GERBES:
OLOS is enrolled in the Gerbes “Community Rewards” program. This program
offers money back to our school, based on enrolled customer’s spending. It is a
really easy process. You just tie your Gerbes shopper’s card to our school
account. If you don’t have a Gerbes shopper’s card, it takes less than a minute
to get one at the store and also online. All the information needed to complete
this process is online. @ www.gerbes.com/communityrewards.
Our school code is 48253. It takes
just a couple minutes so get all your family and friends to register as well!
The school will receive quarterly payments in cash form. We will update you as
we receive those funds. This has the potential to be a huge moneymaker for the
school – the key is to get many, many people involved. Please pass the word to
family and friends and thanks for supporting OLOS School !!! FYI – we recently received $37.84 with only
five families participating. Just think what we could do if all our
families and friends who shop at Gerbes anyway took the time to link their
spending to our school. It’s as easy as that!
