Hearty congratulations to our group of 8th graders, graduating tomorrow evening at the 5:00 pm Mass. We are happy for all of you. May you continue your faith-filled journey in high school and carry God’s love with you in whatever direction you go. We congratulate Tyler Bond, Alison Buechter, Sierra Evers, Mikenzie Farris, Brianna Kliethermes & Raegan Wood. Special congratulations to Alison Buechter (Valedictorian) and Brianna Kliethermes (Salutatorian). We wish you all the best!

Thanks to all who helped chaperone the Reading Counts field trip on Monday. The students had a great time!!!

GOLF TOURNAMENT NEWS: If you would be able to help at the Golf Tournament on Friday, May 20th, please contact Mark Adrian or Rosie/Nancy in the school office. Three people are needed to work the check-in counter from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, and a few more are needed to assist on the course with keeping coolers supplied that afternoon. Thanks so much!

May 20, 2011 is the final day of school for the 2010 - 2011 school year. This will be a half-day, with dismissal at 12:00 noon. THE AWARDS CEREMONY WILL BEGIN AT 9:00 AM. Lunch will be served. There will also be extended care that afternoon.

SPECIAL NOTE!!! The Partner’s in Hope Relay for Life “Boys as Babes” tournament originally scheduled for June 4th has been CANCELLED due to a scheduling conflict. The organizers look forward to seeing everyone on June 2, 2012 for next year’s event!!

OLOS School will be in need of a volunteer librarian for the next school year. Jeanne Buechter has served many years, dedicated to our children and their reading and library needs. Jeanne is now considering taking full time employment instead of part-time (she may be available for a little while at the beginning of the next school year still to help out – we will just have to wait and see!) THANK YOU, THANK YOU JEANNE! Words cannot adequately express how much we appreciate your donation of time and talent!!!  In the meantime – if you or someone you know would like to help out next year, any & all help is appreciated. Top finishers in the tournament were:  Big crappie – 1 lb 5.5 oz. – Justin Rydel & Nathan Oliver - $290.00, 1st place – 10 fish – 9 lb. 1.6 oz. – Brad Bondurant & Kevin Bax - $310.00, 2nd place – 10 fish – 8 lb. 5.6 oz. – Abe Faulkner, John Chrounis, John Chipman - $155.00, 3rd place – 10 fish – 8 lb. 0.1 oz. – Mitch Faulkner, Jake Faulkner, Slim Boessen - $80.00.Total profits to the school for this event were $1180.00. What a great event! Thanks to all the volunteers who worked so hard and organized this event for the school. It is much appreciated!!!

Early congratulations to the six preschoolers who will be “graduating to kindergarten” next Saturday evening at the 5:00 pm Mass. We recognize:  Isabella Groose, Aly Haeffner, Ryan Lepper, Collin Moeller, Ethan Schulte, Aliyah Talledo. God bless you as you continue into your formal schooling years!

This will be the last official Friday Notes for this school year. If anything comes up next week that we need to inform you about, we will send it through the classroom teachers. READING COUNTS FIELD TRIP NEWS: THIS MONDAY, May 9th. Grades PK – 2nd will be going to Miner Mikes at Osage Beach (maze only –WEAR SOCKS- REQUIRED!!) from 9-11 am. We will have water bottles available for these students while at the maze. The 3-8 grades will be going to Lazer Force, at Lake Ozarks, from 9:30-11:00 am. Each student will get to play two games (20 minutes each) in groups of 24. Arcade games will be available at Lazer Force, but the student will need to bring extra spending money if they play these games. ALL STUDENTS ARE TO WEAR THEIR READING COUNTS SHIRTS!!! Lunch will be at a local park. Then all the students will enjoy an afternoon movie at the Lodge of the Four Season (from 12:30 – 2:30) CHANGE – CONCESSIONS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE AT THE MOVIE – but the children will have just finished lunch so they should be fine! All students will get a soda and snack after the movie.  We should be back to school by 3:15-3:30 pm. Parents should be here between 7:45 – 8:00 so that we can get organized. We will be pulling out at 8:15 sharp. WEAR READING COUNTS SHIRTS – REQUIRED!!! May wear shorts/jeans that meet dress code.

Sketch Day Results:  Congratulations to Raegan Wood – who received a HIGH HONOR RIBBON -  and Maggie Morris – who received a HONOR RIBBON - for their sketches. All of the sketches are really good – and are on display in the cafeteria. We are proud of all of our participants: Rachel Wood, Kyle Kliethermes, Megan Evers, Maggie Morris, Daniel Beck, Tyler Bond, Brianna Kliethermes & Raegan Wood.

STUDENT COUNCIL END OF YEAR PIZZA PARTY:  We will end our year with a pizza and games party. This is a members-only party to show appreciation for all the work members put into the events for the school year. The party will be this Wednesday, May 11th until 4:00 or so. Members – please remember to bring a note and also any fun games you may want to play.

Many thanks to the family and friends of Lucille Rush. The school received $971 this week through memorial donations for Lucille. Please pray for Lucille – may she rest in peace, and for the consolation of her family and friends.

HEARTY CONGRATULATONS to all of the 2nd graders who are making their First Holy Communion this weekend. We especially congratulate our students:  Kayla Bond, Kyle Bond, Alex Evers, Hannah Evers, Devin Haeffner, Elizabeth Kliethermes, Jonathan Lepper, Megan McCoy, Trenton Parr, Gage Trachsel, & Gavin Wood. May God bless you abundantly as you make this most important step in your Catholic life!

Thanks to those parents & students who attended the cell phone & internet presentation on Tuesday evening. It was a very informative & “eye-opening” meeting. Unfortunately, the task force was not able to present to the student that afternoon. We will try to get them back next year for our students.

The kindergarten and first grade field trip is scheduled for May 13. They will be going to Leapfrog Fun Center in Holts Summit. The cost for this trip will be $5 per student, with any adults entering free. Please find permission slip in today’s folder. Students may dress down for this field trip. Please note on the attached form whether you (parent/guardian) will attend and the lunch preferences. Students will be riding the van.

Sketch Day participants:  Students need to bring $5 & all sketch materials. Drinks for lunch and water bottles will be provided. Students may dress down – no sloppy clothes. All length requirements are still in force. Student awards will be presented at 1:30 pm at the Selinger Center.

There will be a gardening committee work night this Wednesday, May 4th, beginning at 6:30 pm. Please bring your gardening tools to weed. If you haven’t yet signed up for the gardening committee, and are a willing hand, just show up on Wednesday evening. “Many hands make light work!”

8th graders: Please find permission forms in today’s folder for “Picture Day at the Capitol” with Mrs. Trachsel, on this Tuesday, May 3rd. This is a yearly tradition, in which Mrs. Trachsel treats the 8th graders to a day out, taking pictures for graduation, and enjoying dining out. 8th graders should bring money for lunch and may dress down (nicely) for pictures. All length requirements are still in force.

THIS WEEK!!! OLOS School is sponsoring an “Internet & Cell Phone Safety Presentation for Parents” through the Mid-Mo. Internet Crimes Task Force (Columbia, MO). This presentation will be Tuesday, April 26th at 6:30 pm in the Center. This will include discussion on safety concerns dealing with cell phones, sexting, texting & the internet. A sign-up was previously sent out, but if you are interested and did not return the form, please let us know you would like to attend via a note, phone call or email. All parents are strongly encouraged to attend – this is information you need to know! High school students may also attend. Students in the 6th – 8th grades will be presented with a modified version of this earlier that same afternoon.

Congratulations to the Spelling Bee participants. Overall, OLOS School took 5th place (out of 12 schools participating! Special congratulation to Alex Schulte – for placing 2nd in the 6th grade! Way to go! Other students placing in the 5th spot Cameron Haeffner, 6th or 7th spot were Kalie Massman, Dylan Lepper, Alison Buechter & Maggie Morris.

Please sign & return Progress Reports, found in today’s folder. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact the classroom teacher.

Kindergarten and First Grade field trip is scheduled for May 13. They will be going to Leapfrog Fun Center in Holt Summit. More details soon.

We will have our annual Easter Egg Hunt this Thursday morning (Holy Thursday), before we break for Easter. The hunt will be for students in Grades preschool through 4th. As usual, the older students will be hiding the eggs. Please send in ONE DOZEN CANDY FILLED EGGS by THIS Monday, April 18th - to the classroom, for your preschool through 4th grader. Eggs should be filled with candy that won’t melt in the sun and also no peanut butter products please. Older students who are feeling left out may bring treats to share that morning. Thanks to all for sending in the eggs!

There will be extended care on Holy Thursday afternoon.

The 4th Annual OLOS School Crappie Tournament will be held tomorrow, April 16, 2011, at Coffman Beach, Lake Ozark. There is a $50 entrance fee per team (late entries $10.00 per boat).

Zachary Vandike is a “big brother” again! We are pleased to announce the birth of baby Nicholas William Vandike, born on Thursday, weighing in at 8 lbs. 11 oz. Congratulations to Mr. V., wife Laura & “big sister” – Rylee. Mr. V. will be out next week, enjoying his new baby, and Luke Morris will be subbing in the classroom.

Congratulations to Zachary Eickhoff – proud big brother to little Jacob Daniel Eickhoff. Zachary’s brother was born on Tuesday, April 13th, and weighed 6 lb. 15 oz. Congratulations to mom & dad, Christina & John, big sister -  Mikayla, and of course one very proud grandmother – Mrs. Eickhoff!!

We welcome Mrs. Kathleen Haeffner – newly hired 5th grade teacher for the 2011-12 school year.

OLOS School is sponsoring an “Internet & Cell Phone Safety Presentation for Parents” through the Mid-Mo. Internet Crimes Task Force (Columbia, MO). This presentation will be Tuesday, April 26th at 6:30 pm in the Center. This will include discussion on safety concerns dealing with cell phones, sexting, texting & the internet. A sign-up was previously sent out, but if you are interested and did not return the form, please let us know you would like to attend via a note, phone call or email. All parents are strongly encouraged to attend – this is information you need to know! High school students may also attend. Students in the 6th – 8th grades will be presented with a modified version of this earlier that same afternoon.

OLOS School will participate in the “Great Central U.S. ShakeOut” on April 28th. This is a first-of-its-kind, seven state simultaneous earthquake drill – to occur on the bicentennial of the great New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-12. May 20, 2011 is the final day of school for the 2010 - 2011 school year. This will be a half-day, with dismissal at 12:00 noon. Lunch will be served. There will also be extended care that afternoon. The last day of school for 8th graders will be Friday, May 13th.

CALLING ALL GREEN THUMBS AND WILLING WORKERS:  Help is needed this spring & summer to help keep the school flower beds & bushes weeded & watered.  Rex & Jeanne Buechter, Gina Adrian, Bryan & Stacey Evers, Lori Evers, Lynn Kempker, Nancy Kliethermes, Carla Morris, Rosie Beck, Sheila Adrian & Marie Massman have volunteered but more help is needed. A weekly rotation worked well last year and will probably by implemented this year (there was enough help last year that most families were only assigned 2X).To volunteer please call the school office or contact Jeanne Buechter.

8th grade graduation:  Please remember the dress guidelines for graduates: Boys – dress pants, collared shirt, dress shoes, tie is optional; Girls – dresses, no more than 2 inches above the knee, no spaghetti straps showing, (may wear shawl to cover). Students will be wearing caps & gowns for the graduation & the awards portion of the reception. Cap & gown fee is $8.50, which you may go ahead & send in (checks payable to OLOS).
