CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK 2021: We had a fantastic week here at OLOS School, even with not being able to reach out quite as much as in the past. We would like to thank all students and parents for all the great treats and thoughtful gifts you sent in this week for the staff on Monday. Also, many thanks to Groose Heating & Cooling for the scrumptious fried chicken meal on Monday. On Tuesday, Mr. Akin led the scavenger hunt thoughout Mary’s Home, when students learned local history. Thanks to Mrs. Werdehausen for planning this event! On Wednesday, students participated in the Patriotic Rosary, each one representing a state with their bead. On Thursday, after Mass, Fr. Cal talked to the students about his vocation to the priesthood. He received many nice treats & cards! The 4th graders also presented a play to all the classrooms. And today, Friday, the students were treated to a surprise pancake breakfast fun games of bingo, a special “Stay Lit” tshirt, and movies and snacks. Many thanks to Marie Massman & Carla Morris for making all those pancakes! Of course, the students are what it’s all about, so their day was hopefully a little “extra” special! Check out our Facebook page to see some of the week’s events. Special thanks to Mrs. Groose for all her planning/coordinating skills!

FANTASY NIGHT – The Virtual Fantasy Night will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2020 at 6:00 pm. $50 tickets are available through the school or at Mary’s Home Bank. Congratulations to Jake & Jenny Akin, winners of the “Early Bird” drawing, drawn by a neutral party. They chose an additional ticket into the drawing.  Please help spread the word and sell as many tickets as you can! We have almost 300 of the 500 sold, with just three short weeks to go.

CALLING ALL ROOM PARENTS/VALENTINE’S PARTIES! Valentine’s parties are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 11th at 2:00 pm. We are counting on our great room parents to coordinate the refreshments, games, and activities for these parties. Unfortunately, parents will be unable to attend the parties.

CONGRATULATIONS to our 2nd graders, who made their First Reconciliation Wednesday evening. They are: Anna Berry, Brena Groose, Oliver Hagenhoff, Ryder Lage, & Carina McKenna. Please pray for these, and all the 2nd graders in our parish, who are receiving Sacraments of Initiation this spring.

ACRE TEST: Each year, our 5th & 8th graders (along with PSR 5th & 8th graders) are administered the ACRE test (Assessment of Catechesis Religious Education). This test has two sections. The first is an assessment of general religious knowledge and content appropriate for that age. Section two presents affective questions and statements on attitudes, beliefs, practices, and perceptions. The results help the local & diocesan school system review, revise, and refine current catechesis in our schools and PSR programs.

BREAKING SPORTS NEWS! What a great job the three 7th & 8th grade boys – Garet Wood, Nolan Schulte, & Austin Doerhoff – did at St. Thomas against the St. George, Linn, Warriors. The teams were neck-in-neck and tied until about 10 seconds before we would have gone into overtime. Then, one of the players made the winning 2 points! Great job, boys and what an intense game!!! Even later breaking news…We had another win on Thursday night! St. Thomas Eagles against Honey Creek Blue Jays! Way to go!

GOOD LUCK IN FUTURE ENDEAVORS MS. VOSS! Ms. Voss started teaching music here at OLOS last year. Since then she has grown a bond with many of the students, and has achieved many new relationships with teachers. Ms. Voss has been an asset to our school and will be dearly missed. It is good to know that the next step for Ms. Voss still involves teaching and assisting growing minds of our youth. Please make sure that we continue to pray for continued success to her next step or journey God has provided to her. Thank you Ms. Voss for all you have done, you will be missed!!!

ALL FAMILIES returning their 20-21 Friday folder (The Heavens Declare the Glory of the Lord) by Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021, with any needed paperwork completed, will be placed in a drawing for a bonus dress down pass for students in their family. Congratulations to Zachary, Rylee, & Nicholas Vandike, who won the drawing last week!

Please return your folder on Monday.

Have a great weekend!
