BOX OF JOY UPDATE: What an outpouring of generosity! Our goal for the number of Boxes of Joy filled was 75 boxes. With your help, we have 89 boxes filled! There were many ways people participated - by filling boxes themselves, sponsoring boxes, sending in money for us to do the shopping, sending in items - we even had one talented parishioner make approximately 20 drawstring bags to include in boxes! We thank all who supported in this wonderful project! Next year, we will hopefully be able to involve the school children and PSR children again with packing boxes as group service projects. In the meantime, please be on the lookout for items needed for all boxes, including, but not limited to: crayons, pens, markers, bars of soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, stickers, combs/brushes, forks/spoons, cups, lip balm, tissue packets, socks, notepads, glue sticks, small toys like legos, puzzles, silly putty, dolls, slinky, yo-yo, small balls, cars/trucks. Clearance sales and Christmas sales are great times to pick up many items needed for this project. Just a reminder that please no liquid items. You can store items until next October or feel free to occasionally drop off at school. Check out the parish/school website to see pictures of the Box of Joy project. Please pray...  for each boy and girl who will receive a Box of Joy, that they will receive the box God meant for them to have, that these boxes will show God’s love to each child who receives one, and for God to work in the hearts of people in the communities where these poor children live. We pray too for the many people who donate their time and talent to bring Boxes of Joy to children across the world. 

CEMETERY LIGHTS: Don’t miss the opportunity to drive by the cemetery at night this weekend to see this beautiful sight! Over 1200 lights will be on display! Please take a moment to pray for your loved ones and for those who have no-one to pray for them. Many thanks to the wonderful donors from our parish. We were able to raise enough money for lights for this year, and to supplement another year as well.

PORK STEAK FUNDRAISER: The work list is in today’s folder. Thanks so much to Barb Adrian, for compiling the list. Please turn in all tickets and money on Monday.  All unsold tickets need to be turned in also so we can get them sold. Thanks for your help in making this fundraiser a success!

HALLOWEEN: Thanks so much to all our great room parents, for the planning of the parties – even though you couldn’t be in the classroom! Also, many thanks to those who participated in the Trunk or Treat, and to those who participated in the Halloween Walk – Mary’s Home Bank, Evers Machine, Roxanne at the parish office, and Corner Mkt. All fun activities to make Halloween so much fun!

HOME & SCHOOL MEETING: Our 2^nd Home & School meeting for the year will be on Tuesday, November 10^th at 6:00 pm. Please, all parents, plan on attending. We need your support and ideas! You will receive a bonus dress down pass for your child just for attending! Please, due to the pandemic, we ask that no children attend. Social distancing and use of masks will be required to enter the building.

MARY’S HOME CHRISTMAS PARADE UPDATE: Theme: The Roaring 20’s – Prohibition Ends Here. OLOS School will not be sponsoring a float this year.

REMEMBER to FALL BACK! – set your clocks back at 2:00 am Sunday morning (Sat. night).

CHRISTMAS THEMES: Just to let you know ahead of time, during December students will have another week of daily dress themes, including tacky Christmas gear day (ugly/ridiculous sweater, shirt), Christmas sock day, red & green explosion day, holiday hat/headwear day, and PJ day. Please refer to the OLOS online calendar for more details.

The free meals will be available through the end of the school year. If your child does not attend OLOS School, you may request to pick up a free lunch for any child age 1 to 18. If you wish to order meals for children not enrolled in OLOS School, you will need to contact Carla Morris before 8:15 daily at 573-498-3574 to request the meals. Meal pickup will be at 11:30 am at the side parking lot nearest the kitchen (below M. H. bank). If you have any questions, please call the office at 573-498-3574. Thank you.

INFLUENZA VACCINE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR EVERYONE: taken from document dated 9/23/20 the Missouri Center for Public Health Excellence…the CDC states that “for the upcoming influenza season, the influenza vaccine will be paramount to reduce the impact of respiratory illnesses in the population and resulting burdens on the healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic.” The co-existence of COVID-19 and influenza may cause high numbers of absenteeism. With these things in mind, we strongly recommend influenza vaccination for all who can medically receive it.

 BOXES OF JOY – FINAL COLLECTION DATE IS THIS MONDAY, OCT. 26^TH. Please include pmt. of $9 to Cross Catholic. Thanks to all who have supported our efforts. So far we have 51 boxes turned in, with a goal of 75 boxes filled. The 7^th & 8^th graders filled boxes today, and these numbers are not in this total. We are so close!VOLLEYBALL NEWS: The Lady Cougars ended up their regular season last weekend. They did lose both games, but put forth great effort! We are so proud of our girls for all the great sportsmanship & skill they put into playing this season. Great job Lady Cougars!

DONATIONS FOR CEMETERY LIGHTS: Thanks to ALL who have donated! We were able to pay for over 1000 lights with your donations, and also to again have some seed money for future needs. Make sure to drive by the cemetery at night on Halloween weekend to see this beautiful sight!

NEXT FRIDAY – CHANGE OF MENU – we will serve carrot sticks in place of green beans.

PORK STEAK FUNDRAISER: If you have not already volunteered, and would like to do so, please send in the sign-up sheet sent home last week or call the office or Barb Adrian by this upcoming Tuesday, Oct. 27^th. Finalized work lists will be sent home next Friday, Oct. 30^th.

PLANS FOR HALLOWEEN: On Friday, October 30^th, the school children will be placing the lights on the cemetery and reciting the Litany of the Saints in procession at 11:40. Parents and community are invited to join us, but social distancing will be required. Classroom parties will be with students/teachers only. Classroom parents coordinate to send in treats and for games, if needed. Weather permitting, we still plan on doing the traditional “Halloween Walk”, while asking our community businesses to greet our students outside their businesses. We will be beginning the walk at 1:30 pm. That day is a planned Orange/Black dress down day. Before the walk, we will let students get into costume. Especially this year, make sure costumes are easy to get on/off. We also ask that no scary or gory costumes be worn, so that little ones are not scared.

 HALLOWEEN TRUNK OR TREAT: Parents are welcome to participate in a “Trunk or Treat” the afternoon of the parties, parking in the lot in front of the upper school building by the church. All treats MUST be store-purchased and prepackaged, and masks MUST be worn by all parents/attendees, maintaining social distancing. Students may not “reach in” to select a treat; all treats are to be dropped into their sack by the parent. Please make sure to send a sack/bucket for your child, along with their costume. Inclement weather will cancel this part of the event. If you are interested in participating, please contact Danen Horseman as soon as possible to reserve your spot @ 821-2890.

MARY’S HOME CHRISTMAS PARADE: Friday, November 27^th – “The Roar of 2020!”. Allen & Joan Doerhoff have graciously volunteered the use of a trailer and to pull a float for Our Lady of the Snows School. Much parent help will be needed to decorate. Also – ideas to fit the theme are needed, so please jot down your ideas and send them in, call the school office or contact Joan. Students riding will be responsible for their own costumes once the float theme is set. Next week, we will send out a sign-up sheet to see who is interested.

 THANKS SO MUCH for the $100 donated by the Mary’s Home 4-H to OLOS Parish. So thoughtful!

STUDENT BILLING: The intent is to eventually transfer billing to email statements only, so if you are not receiving an email copy, along with your printed copy, please contact Rosie in the office so that we can get the correct email on file. This would be for any bills related to the lunch program, extended care program, or preschool program. At the present time, preschool bills are going out every two weeks, lunch bills are only going out if you still owe a balance or for snack-time milks, and extended care bills are going out at the end of the month. If once a month is not convenient for you for extended care, please call Rosie in the office to discuss.

HEALTH SCREENINGS will be the morning of Tuesday, November 3^rd. Miller Co. Health Dept. will only be able to send two nurses to OLOSS that day, and they will do the vision and hearing screenings. We are in need of two volunteers to help with height/weight measurements, and to help move students through the process. Please, if you are able, call Rosie in the office. Volunteers would be required to wear masks, gloves, and have a temperature check upon entrance to the school.

OLOS Self-Study: Every 7th year, Catholic Schools in our diocese go through a review process in which parent/teacher committees are formed to study various aspects of the school. These include mission & philosophy, school climate, leadership, personnel, curriculum, instruction, services, facilities, finance & planning, early childhood program, and before and after school care program. Last year was our school's year for review, but the visiting team of area principals/educators was postponed due to the pandemic until last week, when we hosted them for three days at OLOS School. Following are the major strengths, areas of improvement, and recommendations for our school. Recommendations are given priority and are addressed and reported on yearly until our next self-study, for our annual accreditation by the National Nonpublic School Accrediting Association. Thanks so much to our parish and community for the great support of Our Lady of the Snows School!

Visiting Team Summary

During the on-site visit of Our Lady of the Snows School the major strengths seen are:

• The teachers have a strong sense of commitment to the school and each other.
• Teachers are actively engaged with students throughout the day.
• The principal exhibits strong interpersonal skills and welcomes the community into the school.
• The principal is the driving force to improve the technology.
• Teachers are given live feedback on instruction/lesson planning within Google Drive.
• The main school building is well maintained and cleaned. 
• The new school facility provides opportunities for many school and community events. 

The areas of improvement that need the most attention are:

• Student supervision is limited to one adult in the building before and after school.
• Safety measures for the facility are in need of review.
• The annual plan of action report has not been consistently updated.
• Professional development opportunities are limited.\

The key recommendations of the visiting team include:

• The safe school guidelines need to be followed for student supervision.
• The school will develop procedures and implement safe practices for a more secure facility.
• The plan of action report needs to be updated annually/
• The administration should pursue opportunities for more professional development. 

Visiting Team Closing Paragraph:

The Visiting Team found Our Lady of the Snows School to be hospitable and welcoming. The administration, faculty/staff, students, parents, parishioners, and community members made the stay pleasant and enjoyable. The members are especially appreciative of the guidance and direction that is given by the school leadership. This enabled the on-site Visiting Team assessment to be effective and productive. The Visiting Team recognizes the spirit and enthusiasm of this community. The parish community believes in the school's future and is committed to providing a quality Catholic education in the Mary's Home community.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES THIS FRIDAY, OCT. 23: In today’s folder you will find the sign-up sheet for all students, preschool through 8^th grade. If you have not already done so, please make two choices for each of your children and return on Monday or call the office. Conferences are ten minutes each, will be in person, with social distancing, temperature checks, and use of masks required. If you need more time, please schedule additional conference time directly with the classroom teacher. Thank you!

BOX OF JOY – ONE MORE WEEK! If you’d like to participate, we still have boxes available. The 7/8 graders will be filling a few boxes this week, so if you have any items you would like to donate, that would be appreciated as well. If you’d like to just sponsor shipping on a box, you can also do that by remitting $9 (checks payable to Cross Catholic Outreach). Remember – don’t seal your box shut, just wrap with a rubber-band. Thanks to all who are participating in this program. To date, we have 24 boxes turned in! Hooray!

PORK STEAK MEAL WORK SIGN-UP SHEET (Nov 7): If you have not already done so, please return your sign-up, which was sent home last week. This is a parish/school event and the support of all school families is needed and appreciated. Funds collected will help make up for the loss of income from not having our yearly picnic. Opportunities to help are available on both Friday evening and Saturday. Thank you!

BABY SHOWER!!! OLOS will be having a baby shower again this year.  We will be collecting items until October 23.  All items collected will be taken over to church and donated to Birthright. Birthright was very appreciative last year.  Remember they will accept new and gently used baby items, but items most needed at this time are: wipes, diapers sizes NB, 3,4,5,6, sleepers & pajamas NB-24 mo., laundry detergent, mom gifts – body wash, etc, baby wash, diaper rash ointment, socks/booties NB-24 mo., 18-24 mo. winter clothes . This Friday, October 23 students will have a prayer service at 8:00 am, with Mrs. Werdehausen’s class leading a pro-life rosary. The community and families are welcome to come to church to pray with us, as long as social distancing/mask guidelines are followed. The students will then come to the cafeteria to enjoy refreshments and a few games.  Thanks so much for supporting this very worthy cause!

VOLLEYBALL NEWS: The Lady Cougars volleyball team had a win at home last weekend. They won two sets and lost one to St. Peter, JC! Congratulations Lady Cougars! The girls had a little harder time with I. C, losing all three sets, but put in great effort. Good luck to our team tomorrow, when they play their final league games, competing against St. Joe, JC and IC, Loose Creek!

GHOSTY GRAMS FOR SALE! Don’t forget - The Student Council is sponsoring the yearly opportunity to send classmates, friends, and family “Ghosty Grams” for Halloween.

BOX OF JOY: Please consider sponsoring a Box of Joy so that a child who may have never had a Christmas gift before will experience the love of Christ in the upcoming Christmas season. Boxes are available anytime from the school office or the vestibules of church. Cross Catholic Outreach, the sponsor of the program, asks that you include a payment of $9 to offset the shipping of the Box, and also to promote their ministry. Parents and community are invited to join us, but social distancing will be required. Exact time will be announced. Classroom parties will be with students/teachers only. Classroom parents coordinate to send in treats and for games, if needed. Weather permitting, we still plan on doing the traditional “Halloween Walk”, while asking our community businesses to greet our students outside their businesses. We will be beginning the walk at 1:30 pm. That day is a planned Orange/Black dress down day. Before the walk, we will let students get into costume. Especially this year, make sure costumes are easy to get on/off. We also ask that no scary or gory costumes be worn, so that little ones are not scared.

 HALLOWEEN UPDATE: Parents are welcome to participate in a “Trunk or Treat” the afternoon of the parties, parking in the lot in front of the upper school building by the church. All treats MUST be store-purchased and prepackaged, and masks MUST be worn by all parents/attendees, maintaining social distancing. Students may not “reach in” to select a treat; all treats are to be dropped into their sack by the parent. Please make sure to send a sack/bucket for your child, along with their costume. Inclement weather will cancel this part of the event. If you are interested in participating, please contact Danen Horseman as soon as possible to reserve your spot @ 821-2890.

Wednesday – Crazy sock day (dress in school code attire, but with your crazy socks)

Friday – Orange/Black dress down day

Monday, Tuesday, & Friday – students may dress down but must meet all length/sleeve requirements and honor the intent of the dress down days. Wednesday & Thursday students will be attending the prayer services at church so these will be normal dress code days, with the add-ons.

 INFLUENZA VACCINE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR EVERYONE: taken from document dated 9/23/20 the Missouri Center for Public Health Excellence…the CDC states that “for the upcoming influenza season, the influenza vaccine will be paramount to reduce the impact of respiratory illnesses in the population and resulting burdens on the healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic.” The co-existence of COVID-19 and influenza may cause high numbers of absenteeism. With these things in mind, we strongly recommend influenza vaccination for all who can medically receive it.

STUDENT BILLING: The intent is to eventually transfer billing to email statements only, so if you are not receiving an email copy, along with your printed copy, please contact Rosie in the office so that we can get the correct email on file. This would be for any bills related to the lunch program, extended care program, or preschool program. At the present time, preschool bills are going out every two weeks, lunch bills are only going out if you still owe a balance or for snack-time milks, and extended care bills are going out at the end of the month. If once a month is not convenient for you for extended care, please call Rosie in the office to discuss.

FREE LUNCH FOR ALL STUDENTS – ALL students can receive a free lunch each day, whether or not they were previously bringing a sack lunch. This can be a daily decision by the parent/student. The more that participate, the better, as it is a fully funded program through the CARES Act/USDA

VOLLEYBALL UPDATE: The Lady Cougars volleyball team lost all three games to Trinity Lutheran; and lost 2 and won 1 game to St. Francis Xavier last Saturday. The girls were short a player, and they definitely made the other teams work for it, but they just couldn’t pull it off. A+ for good effort though! Good luck to this team tomorrow, when they play their only home games of the season, competing with two Jefferson City teams – I. C. and St. Peter!

HEALTH SCREENINGS will be a little later this year – the morning of Tuesday, November 3^rd. Miller Co. Health Dept. will only be able to send two nurses to OLOSS that day, and they will do the vision and hearing screenings. We are in need of two volunteers to help with height/weight measurements, and to help move students through the process. Please, if you are able, call Rosie in the office. Volunteers would be required to wear masks, gloves, and have a temperature check upon entrance to the school.

ACHIEVEMENT TESTING WEEK: All students in grades 1-8 will be taking the Iowa Achievement tests throughout the mornings of the upcoming week. Please make sure that your child eats a good hearty breakfast and gets plenty of rest. Your child will also have the opportunity to enjoy a morning snack and drink at school.

BOX TOPS: Please send in any Box Tops for Education that you may have clipped over the last few weeks/months. The Box Tops program is shifting to an app, with which you have to scan your receipt. If you are willing to participate this way, it is much appreciated, but if not, it is perfectly understandable. Thank you for supporting this program.

DONATIONS FOR CEMETERY LIGHTS: We are buying all new lights this year, as last year with the rain and bad weather, all lights were worn out. While we do have some seed money for this, we are asking for any donation towards the purchase of new lights. If you are able to help out, send your payment in a marked envelope to the school office or collection basket at church (checks payable to OLOS). Thank you!

While they lost their match last Saturday to St. Stanislaus in three very close games (21/25, 23/25, 21/25), they came back to win their match against Our Lady of the Lourdes taking 2 out of 3 of the games (27/25, 25/19, 19/25). Good luck to our Lady Cougars tomorrow, when they compete against Trinity & St. Francis X!

FANTASY NIGHT: Tentative plans are to hold Fantasy Night, our second biggest fundraiser (after the picnic), on Saturday, Feb. 6^th, 2021.

SELF-STUDY: - October 14-16, 2020. More information on the day to day schedule for the self-study will be forthcoming as we receive more information from the diocesan school office.

FIRE VISIT CANCELED: Due to the pandemic, the Cole County Fire District has canceled the presentation on October 16^th. This may be rescheduled in the spring, if possible.

FREE MEALS FOR ALL STUDENTS – OFFICIAL PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Effective Monday, September 21, ALL students at Our Lady of the Snows School will be able to receive FREE lunch through DESE Seamless Summer Option and the USDA. The free meals will be available through December 31, 2020, or until the funds run out. If your child does not attend OLOS School, you may request to pick up a free lunch for any child age 1 to 18. If you wish to order meals for children not enrolled in OLOS School, you will need to contact Carla Morris before 8:15 daily at 573-498-3574 to request the meals. Meal pickup will be at 11:30 am at the side parking lot nearest the kitchen (below M. H. bank). For those already participating in the hot lunch program (full & reduced priced meals), you will receive a bill Thursday, Sept. 24, 2020, in the weekly folder, for the partial month of meals through September 18, 2020. If you have any questions, please call the office at 573-498-3574.
